Tips for a Smooth Family Photo Session

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve heard say that they hate family photo shoots! First off this makes me sad. Secondly, there are so many ways to change that! Many of my first-time clients say how pleasant our session was when compared to the ones they’ve had before. I’ve had many repeat clients based on the experience that they have had with me! With a bit of preparation and a dash of humor, you can turn your family photo session into a memorable and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Let’s dive into some tips and tricks for a smooth and fun family photo session for both families and photographers.

Plan Ahead

Families: If you have young kids make sure that they are fed and well rested before the session. Nothing is harder to please than a hungry and tired child! Hungry and thirsty family members can quickly become grumpy models. Pack some easy portable snacks and drinks to keep energy levels up and avoid any “hangry” moments during the photo session.

Photographers: I’ve found that it’s easiest to hold kids’ attention at the very beginning of the session. Often I try to get some full family photos right off the bat. Once the kids start getting squeamish and can’t hold focus anymore I like to give them a break to run around while I take photos of parents and older siblings/couples. Giving the kids breaks like this is a good way to hold their attention much better when you do need it.

Coordinate Outfits, Don’t Match

Families: While matching outfits might seem like a good idea, coordinating colors and styles can create a visually appealing look without being too uniform. This allows each family member’s personality to shine through too! I also recommend staying away from really small patterns like tiny stripes or dots as sometimes they can look like an optical illusion in the photos.

Photographers: I like to send out the tips above at least a week in advance of the scheduled shoot so the family has time to coordinate outfits. I also offer to take a look at outfits if they would like. I’ve had many clients send me photos of outfits to get advice and it helps them be more confident walking into the shoot knowing their outfit will look good on camera. This is also something a lot of family photographers don’t offer, so it helps set you apart!

Embrace Candid Moments

Families: Your photographer will help you pose but don’t be afraid to interact and joke with each other as you naturally do. That kind of interaction creates the most natural smiles and amazing candid moments that are unique to you and your family.

Photographers: Some of the best family photos happen when no one is posing. Encourage candid moments by telling jokes, playing games, or simply letting everyone interact naturally. Candid shots capture the true essence of your family’s dynamics.

Get the Kids Involved

Families: Parents please don’t hesitate to communicate with your photographer if if there are things your children love or ways to capture their attention that would help the session go smoothly. You know your children best so if they need a break, food, or you know of a way to engage them please let your photographer know.

Photographers: If there are little ones, make them feel like part of the process. Ask for their input on poses or let them choose a favorite spot for a photo. This involvement can turn the photo session into a delightful adventure for them.

Weather Needs

Families: I am a Utah photographer and as such, half the year is pretty darn cold! While most families don’t want huge coats in their photos that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bring them. If it is cold out please bring coats and/or blankets to warm up in when you are not shooting, especially for kids!

Photographers: Red cheeks are not what the family wants in their photos. Make sure they are warming every so often in blankets or even in a warm car if it’s really bad out. Something that can be helpful is bringing hand warmers for your clients as well!

Furry Family Members

Families: If your family includes pets, consider incorporating them into the photo session. Pets can add an extra layer of warmth and playfulness to your photos. Make sure to have treats on hand to keep them engaged and capture those adorable moments of interaction.

Photographers: Pets can add so much to a photo just like they add so much to a family. If you know there is going to be a furry friend at your session make sure to bring a squeaky toy or something of the sort to get their attention in photos. And of course, encourage candid playful moments with them!

Communicate with Your Photographer:

Families: Establish clear communication with your photographer about your expectations and any specific shots you have in mind. Share details about your family’s dynamics, preferences, and even any concerns. While your photographer will have poses and ideas in mind for your family, they are not mind readers so if you have something specific in mind it is always good to let them know!

Photographers: While family photos are the main focus, don’t forget to capture individual shots of each family member. This allows everyone to showcase their unique personalities, and these individual photos can make for great additions to photo albums or frames.

Be Patient and Flexible:

Families: Understand that not everything will go as planned. Kids might get fussy, and unexpected events can occur. Stay patient, go with the flow, and be open to embracing the unpredictable moments that make your family unique.

Photographers: Remember, the goal is to capture the love and connection within the family. Relax and have fun, that way they will too! A relaxed atmosphere translates into natural and heartwarming photos.

Conclusion

The key to a successful family photo session is to focus on the love and connection within your family. Each photo should tell a story and capture the essence of your unique bond. By incorporating these additional tips and tricks, you’ll not only have a smooth photo session but also a collection of cherished memories that reflect the true spirit of your family!
